Trans-cervical insemination (TCI) is a method to deliver sperm directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix. The advantage is the same as the surgical intrauterine method of insemination (commonly called surgical insemination). With a standard insemination, most of the sperm may not penetrate the cervix. This can be especially true for frozen or chilled semen, or in cases of bitch or stud dog decreased fertility.
The process for TCI uses an endoscope (essentially a tiny video camera) which is passed up the vaginal canal of a bitch and to the cervix. The inseminator is able to watch the positioning of the catheter on a TV monitor to which the endoscopic view is shown. The actual insemination can be visualized, ensuring that the deposition of semen is in the uterus and that minimal back flush occurs.
Bitches are inseminated in a standing position without sedation. The owner is encouraged to hold the bitch and observe the procedure. We can use a video display to visualize the procedure. The procedure is painless and usually takes 15-30 minutes.
If done properly, TCI can be as successful as surgical insemination. Both methods do the same thing by allowing deposition of semen into the uterus. However, anesthesia is generally not required for TCI, thus reducing risks to the bitch. Most bitches actually tolerate this procedure very well. Materials such as suture, surgical supplies, etc, are also not required, reducing client costs. The time it takes to perform the procedure is much less and the bitch can go home immediately after the procedure. Also, TCI can be repeated if needed unlike surgical insemination.
